An internationally renowned musician has agreed to become the patron of a city orchestra.

Cellist Guy Johnston hopes to inspire Exeter Young Strings, a group which teaches youngsters who might not normally get involved in classical music.

Earlier this year, orchestra bosses were given a Youth Music grant, which has allowed them to work with two to five-year-olds at Beacon Heath Children's Centre, Whipton Children's Centre, Whipton Barton First School and Willowbrook School.

Many youngsters also have learning difficulties.  Younger children can attend cello or violin 'babies' groups taken by cellist Kay Tuckers.

Exeter City Council has also given the group cash to buy small violins and cellos for children from low income families.  For details see www.exeteryoungstrings.org or call 01392 460444.
