Song for Chris is a memorial Cello Concerto - easy to imagine, but very hard to bring off as well as Gregson does on this occasion. It is a beautifully balanced work, and is quietly impressive (as opposed to the more 'public' Trombone Concerto). It receives what I can well believe is a very fine performance by Guy Johnston (I have not seen the score), clearly splendidly partnered by the excellent BBC Concert Orchestra and its outstandingly gifted conductor (Bramwell Tovey)... the result is a most welcome CD of no little distinction.
