Guy Johnston c Richard Cannon

The 2009/2010 season marks Guy's debut with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (Concerto in Azzuro, David Matthews) and the RTE National Symphony Orchestra (Shostakovich Concerto).  Other concerto highlights include a return to perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Elgar Cello Concerto), Northern Sinfonia (Schumann Concerto)  to Dublin to perform the Haydn Concertos with the Orchestra of St Cecilia, a tour of the Haydn D Major Concerto with Manchester Camerata, and a performances with the BBC Singers of a world premier by Judith Bingham and works by Tavener.  Guy will be joining in birthday celebrations marking 40 years of Chethams School of Music with a performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Jennifer Pike and Leon McAuley, and at the BBC Proms in a number of chamber concerts at the Cadogan Hall.  Guy Has recently released a CD on the Chandos label of the Concerto in Azzuro by David Matthews with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Guy will embark on a tour of the UK with the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and a tour in Japan with the Oskak Philharmonic Orchestra playing the concertos of Elgar, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky.  He will also complete a tour around the Baltic Sea with destinations to include Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki, and St Petersburg with pianist Ashley Wass and violinist Catherine Leonard.  Guy will also be perfomaing through Germany this season including a residency at the Moritzburg Festival.  He will complete a number of studio recordings for BBC Radio 3 and in Berlin for Deutschland Radio, as well as a three CD recordings of solo cello and chamber works, all to be released in 2010.

In recital, Guy will this season perform at the BBC Proms, City of London Festival, Tetbury Music Festival, Cambridge Music Festival, Chester Music Festival, Aberystwyth Musicfest International Festival, Rydale Music Festival, Shaldon Festival and also at venues in Ireland, France and Japan.  Forthcoming collaborations include returning to work with pianists Kathryn Stott, Charles Owen, Huw Watkins, Finghin Collins and Ashley Wass.

Guy recently commissioned a new work for cello and piano by British composer Dylan Pugh, in conjunction with Sounds Underground. The project was awarded a residency by Aldeburgh Productions and was performed at Snape Maltings and in London. Guy will be returning to complete a Residency at Aldeburgh to work on Britten’s Cello Suites in preparation for performances this season. Guy has also recently been involved in the World and European premiers of works by Ian Wilson, Peter Maxwell Davies and Nicholas Maw.

Aronowitz Ensemble

Being a committed chamber musician, Guy is also a founder member of the Aronowitz Ensemble who have recently been invited onto the prestigious BBC New Generation Artists Series. For more information on the ensemble's upcoming concerts please visit www.aronowitzensemble.co.uk.

Guy is regularly invited to perform at the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove and has consequently collaborated with musicians including Steven Isserlis, Ferenc Rados, and Gerhard Schulz. Recently, Guy has also collaborated and performed with Tasmin Little, Nicholas Daniel, Ashley Wass, Peter Cropper, Michael Collins, Janine Jansen, and Isabelle van Kuelen.
